Exfoliators are an essential part of healthy-looking, smooth and soft skin, but be warned you can overdo it! If your skin is dry, look for a gentle scrub and indulge once or twice a week. Oily or combination skin can generally be exfoliated twice or thrice a week. Now, there are some products that are gentle enough to be used every day, but if you want my advice the best thing you can do is “listen” to (or should that be observe – look and feel) your skin when choosing between all the exfoliators on the market.
Microbeads are a controversial ingredient in many mainstream scrubs, these are plastic balls that give mainstream products their exfoliation qualities, however, they are bio-accumulative and have entered the food chain through marine life. There are many campaigns going on to ban the microbead, and with scientific papers to back up the claim surely, it’s only a matter of time before this bio-hazard is banned from not only exfoliators but other products as well. Here are six of our favourite natural and organic facial exfoliators that we’ve been using of late, and not a microbead in sight!
Kimberly Sayer Gentle Almond & Lavender Face Scrub – this rich and gentle exfoliator contains a trio of organic exfoliating grains – almond meal, jojoba beads (NOT microbeads), and oats, which work together to gently slough away dead skin cells and never damage or scratch the skin’s surface. Because it also contains nourishing oils including almond, safflower seed and coconut, it’s suitable for use every day. This exfoliator is a great option for dry skin types.

Ritessens Teint d’Eclat Exfoliating Face Cream – I picked this sample up at Beyond Beauty. It’s a creamy exfoliator, rich in argan oil and offers a gentle but deep cleansing exfoliating action. It’s 98.7% natural and 15.4% of these ingredients are organically produced. This exfoliator is a great option for sensitive skin.
